Religious Education

Religious Education

Religious Education is taught in accordance with the Cambridgeshire Agreed Syllabus. As a voluntary controlled school with a Christian foundation, in each year there is a focus on Christianity plus the opportunity for pupils to learn and evaluate their own views on other world religions.  RE enables pupils to appreciate their own and others’ beliefs and cultures, helping them to develop a clear understanding of the significance of religion in their own area as well as in the world today.

RE intends to promote religious understanding and respect, and to challenge prejudice, discrimination and stereotyping. At Barrington Church of England Primary we believe that it is important for children to understand and be exposed to the other main world faiths. The pupils learn about love and respect for all people and their beliefs. “The wisdom and tradition of other religions help expand the arena in which God lives and moves and has being.” (Rev. Mark Beckwith)

Our teaching of R.E is concerned with the promotion of each pupil’s self-worth, enabling them to reflect on their uniqueness as human beings, to share their feelings and emotions with others and to appreciate the importance of forming and maintaining positive relationships.

We strongly believe that the purpose of RE is about religious literacy. Our children will learn about world religions and so develop an understanding of the differences and similarities between different faiths. They will also learn from world religions and be encouraged to develop both positive attitudes and respect towards other people, their beliefs and lifestyles and their own spiritual development through exploring and responding to the fundamental questions of life. This means we aim for children to be able to hold a balanced and well-informed conversation about religion and belief.

Lucy McGregor is the lead for RE and in this role regularly attends county RE coordinator meetings. Gill Davies is the lead for Collective worship and works closely with Rev Felicity and leaders of other local church schools to plan the collective worship programme each term.

Throughout the school we have carefully planned the teaching of R.E. so that our children will gain an understanding of all the main world religions.
The table below shows how the RE curriculum is set out across our school.
